End of the season came for the Pirates the other week in the second round of the tournament. After a close win in the Round 1, they had to play the Reds in the second game. The Reds only lost one game in the regular season so it wasn't going to be easy. With great pitching and some nice hitting, the Pirates took the Reds to the bottom of the fifth and struck out the last batter. Having seemingly upset one of the best teams, the celebration ensued. However, the Reds decided to protest to a young umpire that the game started late and they should be allowed one final inning. They called the boys out for one last inning. The Reds were at the top of the order and won the game by one run when it was all finished.
Amazing how many life lessons can be learned in a simple game of baseball. Not the way a team should end a season with coaches and umpires arguing a technicality but another lesson to learn about the world. However, we were all happy to hear that the Dodgers took out the Reds in the finals while we left for vacation.
