The Boneyard
The Boneyard is the boys own little retreat at the Texas cabin. It has become Mom's mission to clear branches, furnish with rocks for seats, and create entrances and exits. They also have their own wind chimes made from the remains of an old Lazy Boy. It is called the Boneyard because the boys first found bones from an animal on that site.

Thanksgiving Party
It was off to Noah's Thanksgiving party for his class before the break. They wrote out what they were thankful for, had snacks and an early dismissal. Dressed in their Native American garb , they all had a great time.

Pedernales Falls
It was off to the Cub Scout camp out this past weekend. Right as we got there on early Saturday morning, it was off on a hike to the falls. Before the craziness of the weekend had begun, we caught this pic of Jacob.

Rainy Day
What better to do on a rainy day but put the boots on and go play in the backyard. Perhaps we need a captioning contest to describe what would appear to be happening next once Jacob pulls the wagon (and he's pretty strong)!

Voting
Memo to Noah & Jacob......It was a late night for Mom and a really late night for Dad last night watching election returns. We voted and will always vote. There are many reasons to vote but here are just a few to keep in mind when you reach that age:
1. To honor Founding Father Benjamin Franklin’s challenge to us all.
Following the close of the Constitutional Convention, he was asked “What have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” He answered, “A republic, if you can keep it!”
2. So you can complain with integrity.
“Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the people and burn their behinds, then they will have to sit on their blisters.” – Abraham Lincoln
3. Because “Taxation without representation is tyranny.” – James Otis
4. For the anticipation of seeing who wins!
5. For the 38,159 missing in action, awaiting a return home to their nation of equality, justice, and freedom.
6. Because you have researched your candidates and can make an informed vote
7. If you don’t vote for your own interests, who will?
8. Because “Apathy gets you the government we have today.” – Gil Sery
9. “You can vote for yourself, or someone you really like.” – Dillon McHugh
10. “Because the rest of us are depending on you.” – Marv DeBoy

The Bats
Last week on Sunday was a trip to downtown Austin near the Congress Avenue bridge to see the bats come out for the night. With it being a school night, we weren't sure it was the right time to go but did it anyway. We got there about 6:00 and our research said they were to leave the bridge around 6:45 PM. It may have been the warm weather or something else but we ended up leaving close to 8:00 PM and they had not yet departed. We will put that adventure back on the list.

In Memoriam
George Albert Helmers was born on October 25, 1924, to Albert and Nella (Feldkamp) Helmers. He graduated from Sibley High School in 1942. He attended Iowa State University before serving in the U.S. Army in France, Belgium, and Germany during WWII. He served in General Patton’s 3rd Army as a Sgt. Major in the 60th Field Artillery Battalion and received various commendations. Following discharge, he served in the Reserve for three years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. On January 13, 1945, he married Dolorys Attig in Mineral Wells, Texas. George was a grain and livestock farmer. He became a well-known judge of Shorthorn Cattle. He served on many agricultural organizations.
George was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for 72 years. He was a township trustee for 68 years and on the Board of Education for 40 years. He was a member of Rotary for 62 years and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was named a Master Swine Producer in 1962 and an Iowa Master Farmer in 1980. He served on the Iowa State University Extension Board. After retirement, he became involved with farm management and appraisal.
He enjoyed music and in his youth sang with several quartets, including the “Hawkeye Four.” He participated in sports and athletics, especially baseball.
George is survived by his wife, Dolorys; children: Scott (Shirley) Helmers of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Cynthia (Brian) Kemp of Sibley, Rick (Samantha) Helmers of Scottsdale, Arizona, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sister Rose (Fred) Van Loh of Sheldon, Iowa, brother Glenn (Helen) Helmers of Lincoln, Nebraska, and sister-in-law Dorothy Helmers of Boerne, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence, Harold, and Roger, and infant daughters Margaret and Jeanne.

List Two
It all began when the teacher let the parents know that they were introducing a second spelling list each week. If the child performed well on list one....they moved to an advanced list two. Spelling tests were each Friday.
Noah performed well week one and came home with list two to practice with all week prior to the test. The words were much more advanced. After getting off to a rough start on Monday evening, complete with tears, he buckled down all week with his homework and did great on his test.
It is nice to see him stick with it and see that not everything comes easily....even in first grade.
